Roger Federer and Serena Williams were announced as the International Tennis Federation’s World Champions for 2009. This isn’t Roger first time winning this award it is is 5th time. As for Serena this is her second time winning the award. Serena also won the award in doubles with her sister Venus Williams. The last person to accomplish such a feat was non other than Martina Navratilova who is known for both her singles and doubles play.
Serena has come along way since her Serena Slam in 03 but I think she has made an incredible comeback. Roger Federer has had one of the roughest years he has had in a long time. But we forget that he is human and he can’t win everything. Both players were clearly the best players of 2009 but 2010 could be a bumpy road.
On the men’s side we have veterans and young players stepping up their games and really pushing Federer all the way in some cases have gotten the best of him especially in the later part of this year. Serena will have to face her sister Venus of course plus Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova, Jelena Jankovic and we can’t forget the women getting all the buzz, Justine Henin. Will they prevail as they did this year? Or will a new ITF Champion be crowned? Next year is just oozing excitement. We can catch all the action first up at next year’s Australian Open which isn’t that far away.
